Tegemeo at the Global Open Data on Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) Summit, 14-16, June 2017

Tegemeo Institute participated at the Global Open Data on Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) Summit recently held in Nairobi. GODAN supports the proactive sharing of an open data to make information about agriculture and nutrition available, accessible and usable so as to deal with the urgent challenge of ensuring the world food security. The group with membership from national governments, non-governmental, international and private sector organisations’ focuses on building high level policy and public and private institutional support for open data.

During the event, Tegemeo Institute’s Director, Dr. Mary Mathenge made a keynote address on ‘improving coordination in data for agricultural transformation”. The session sort to address informational aspects for the agriculture sector as affected by the lack of coordination of data, especially on Agricultural and Rural Statistics (ARS). Issues of lack of integration of the ARS into the National Statistical System (NSS) were addressed as it was noted that data produced by different ministries, departments, and agencies in some cases of devolved systems is difficult to coordinate since they lack standards and rare of poor quality. Duplication of work and conflicts in data also arise and acts as a disincentive to policy makers who need data to make decisions. Dr. Mary Mathenge noted that there is need for harmonization and coordination of evidence backed data among stakeholders to improve on evidence based decision making on policies that will impact the agriculture sector in Kenya and the region.

The global Open Data on Agricultutre and Nutrition (GODAN) initiative encourages collaboration and cooperation among existing agriculture and open data activities, without duplication and brings together stakeholders to solve long standing global problems like food and nutritional security.
